Description: San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, is located in the central valley of the Costa Rican highlands. Lush tropical mountains, fiery volcanoes, exotic wildlife, and virgin beaches make Costa Rica an ideal destination for the adventurous traveler. Long considered Latin Americas most stable country, Costa Rica has been without a standing army since 1948. Costa Ricas warm people and rich culture combined with its environmental wonders make it an exciting study abroad destination.

LPI has two offices in San Jose. The main LPI office is located just southeast of downtown, within walking distance of Veritas University. The other office is located at the Latin American University of Science and Technology (ULACIT). At the LPI offices, students can check their email, receive tutoring, check out books, or simply visit and practice the Spanish language. LPIs resident staff is dedicated to maximizing the students experience while studying abroad. They will conduct the on-site orientation, lead excursions, set up intercambios with local students, and assist students with any school-related questions or problems. The Latin American University of Science and Technology was founded in 1987 and received its accreditation that same year. The ULACIT offers courses in such diverse areas as Spanish language, Business, Law, Engineering, Humanities and general electives. There is an enrollment of approximately 1,500 Costa Ricans and 100 international students each semester. The facilities are very modern, and classrooms are spacious. The university is conveniently located in downtown San Jose. LPI students will have full access to all university facilities such as internet, study areas, and the library.

Highlights: Excursions include Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna, Tabacon, National Museum.

LPI (Learning Programs International)'s Mission Statement: LPI was established in 1989 to provide an academically challenging and culturally thorough study abroad program for U.S. high school students. Based in Austin, Texas, LPI reaches out to provide study abroad opportunities to students from across the United States. LPI works closely with fully-accredited foreign universities and the LPI resident staff in each program location in order to provide tutoring services, intercambio opportunities, and numerous possibilities for improving language performance. Through LPI, students are able to equip themselves with a working knowledge of a foreign language, earn college credit, experience another culture by living with a homestay, and explore the area around their program city through cultural excursions.
