LPI Study Abroad for College Credit in Guanajuato, Mexico
Mexico
- Central Highlands:
Guanajuato
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Please refer to the LPI website.
Description:
Guanajuato is situated in the highlands of Mexico's colonial heartland and is a blend of both the Old and the New Worlds. One of the most important mining centers in Mexico during the colonial period, Guanajuato was also the site of the first major rebel victory against the Spanish in the Mexican War for Independence. The city still maintains its colonial charm with cobblestone streets and historic buildings that are relatively untouched by modern construction. Its intricate system of underground tunnels now serve as the principal roadways within the city, creating a timeless appearance. The LPI office is situated in the heart of Guanajuato, only five minutes walking distance from the university and next to the Jardín Unión, a lively plaza lined with cafes and restaurants. It is not uncommon for students to see religious processions, community parades, mariachis and local musicians from the balconies of the office. At the LPI office, students can check their email, receive tutoring, check out books, or simply visit and practice their Spanish. LPIs resident staff will conduct the on-site orientation, lead excursions, set up intercambios with local students, and assist students with any school-related questions or problems. Visit the LPI website for photos and bios of the resident staff. The University of Guanajuato was founded in 1732 and became a state college in 1828 when it was transferred over to the state of Guanajuato. Having undergone three centuries of institutional transformation, the university now has an enrollment of 20,000 students in 20 academic departments. LPI students take classes at the Centro de Idiomas language department, which also offers instruction to local students in nine different languages. Beyond the classroom, the university makes efforts to connect its students to the world of art, literature, music, and film. In addition to many cultural events around the city, the annual university-sponsored Festival Cervantino in October brings visitors from around the world to enjoy international works of art and film, as well as concerts by famous musicians.
