A Youth For Understanding USA (YFU) study abroad program is an experience that will immerse you in the lives, cultures, and communities of a real family in one of more than 40 countries around the globe. An adventure where you'll learn----in a year, semester or a summer---what life is like for teens in another part of the world. An experience that will change you and your view of our planet forever. A YFU exchange program is the learning adventure of a lifetime. YFU is a homestay experience where you with a carefully selected host family who has agreed to open their home and their hearts to you----providing room, board, and a caring home. You'll gain a global family, make new friends, and even attend school on academic programs. Have a journey you could have never imagined at home, and you'll discover that the YFU experience is a powerful engine for personal growth. You will experience many moments of what the Danes call hygge, a special word meaning an all-embracing feeling of warmth and comfort. Like its Scandinavian neighbors, Denmark has historically been considered one of the most socially progressive cultures in the world. The birthplace of Lego's, this country is also known for its extensive public bike and hiking trails.
Highlights:
The Danish equivalent of high school is divided among three different types of schools: gymnasiums offer general academic education, business schools offer business and commercial studies, and technical schools offer technical and vocational training. Based on your interests and qualifications, you will attend the type of school and have access to a curriculum that best suits your educational goals. Compulsory subjects will be Danish language and literature, history, and foreign languages. You will also be able to participate in a wide range of optional classes and may have the chance to participate in a school study tour in Europe. As a YFU year or semester student in Denmark, you will participate in a five-day orientation with international students from different countries upon arrival. Basic language training will be provided at the orientation. Students will also have a post arrival weekend 2 months after arrival and a re-entry orientation before they return to the US. YFU year students will also have a mid-year seminar to evaluate and reflect on the first half of the year and focus on what they want to accomplish during the rest of their stay. While many students may bike to school each day, some students will ride the bus. Students are required to purchase their own bus card with can cost approximately 350 Danish Kroner a month.
