Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks and 2-4 weeks
Dates: 2009: Sunday, 28th June - Saturday, 11th July ; Sunday, 19th July - Saturday, 1st August

Description: If your passion is medicine then this is a brilliant opportunity to further your knowledge and gain practical experience. The time you spend on this placement will be of huge
benefit if you are considering a career in medicine. You will be working in one of Ulaanbaatars leading hospitals under expert supervision. When you first arrive, an introductory session will cover basic professional skills as well as Mongolian attitudes and ideas. The focus of the practical work will be at the Central University Hospital of Mongolia, the largest hospital in the country.

You'll leave after experiencing medicine in the most remote capital city on earth and gaining valuable insight into rural community issues. You will take a weekend break to the beautiful Khustai National Park, where you will stay overnight in a Nomads tent, called a ger. The sights are spectacular! You will also get plenty of time to socialize at a traditional Mongolian barbeque.

Please Note: This project is only open to volunteers aged 16-19.

Medicine in Mongolia with Projects Abroad (2-Week High School Special)

Highlights: Home of one of the last truly nomadic peoples, Mongolia is a land of wide open spaces that includes barren desert, wild fertile steppe and imposing mountains. Mongolia's ancient history dates back to the once great empire of Chinggis Khaan, and you may even find relics of a prehistoric nature in the great expanse of the Gobi!

All accommodation and food you receive is arranged and monitored by Projects Abroad. All projects placements are regularly visited and checked.

In addition, this project offers you the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
