Coach Sports in Ghana with Projects Abroad (Two-Week High School Special)
Ghana
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: July 20th-August 2nd, 2008; August 3rd-August 16th, 2008
Description:
Spend a fortnight or three weeks in friendly, wild West Africa. Use your sporting talents to teach new skills and train children at a sports placement in Accra. You'll assist the coaches in their sports and general fitness classes, and you can hold a few classes yourself if you feel up to it. All sports skills are welcome, although football is the most popular. Your coaching skills will be shown off by preparing the children for a local match which you can then help to referee. Interacting with the children on a personal level, you'll develop their skills and confidence whilst having fun playing your chosen sports at the same time. At the weekend we'll take you to Cape Coast to visit Kakum Rainforest Reserve where you can hike through the jungle and experience the canopy walkway high in the trees. You'll also have the chance to visit Cape Coast's slave fort and stop off at a beach resort. If Accra's football team, Hearts of Oak are playing we'll take you along.
Highlights:
The Ghanaian people, in general, are the friendliest you will meet. They pride themselves as the friendliest in Africa, sometimes in the world! In order to appreciate the sincere friendliness of them please make every effort to instigate conversations with your host family and workmates. Only by doing this will you really learn and therefore appreciate the Ghanaian culture. For your accommodation, you'll live with a host-family. All the families involved are extremely supportive of Projects Abroad and are eager to experience an inter-cultural exchange so they can learn more about the lives of volunteers. This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do. In addition, volunteers on the July 20th - August 2nd round of projects in Ghana have the option of being escorted from New York - JFK airport.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
