Summer Homestay in Lyon, France for High School Students
France
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: 2010 Dates: June 21 - July 12
Description:
Lyon - A unique blend of old and new for your Summer Abroad in France! Students participate in an enriching homestay experience without formalized classes in Lyon. Founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, historic & cosmopolitan Lyon is filled with museums, theaters, monuments, & restaurants. Outdoor markets, local crafts, cultural entertainment, parks, and sports facilities all contribute to making Lyon an ideal base for a high school summer abroad! Our warm & friendly Lyon Immersion Families all live within easy reach of each other and the center of town. For many students the homestay aspect of the Lyon trip is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding features of this French immersion program! Start with 3 days/nights in Nice, followed by 2 weeks in Lyon. Finish the trip with 3 days/nights in Paris.
Highlights:
The Fourvière District Perched on a hillside overlooking the city is one of the most popular tourist spots in Lyon. Dating back to Roman times, its theater and aqueducts have survived to this day. Annecy This is an amazingly photogenic village at the edge of the dazzling Lake of Annecy in the Haute Savoie. With its Chateau overlooking the pedestrian streets of the Old Town, and many canals, Annecy resembles Venice. Part of the magic of the city is its many architecturally unusual old streets and covered passageways. Beaujolais One of the excursions may be an afternoon trip to the wine-making region of Beaujolais. As they arrive into the area, students will see rows and rows of grapevines and will bask in the warm, sunny weather needed for growing grapes. They will have a tour at Le Hameau du Vin (The Hamelet of Wine) where they will learn about the history of wine and wine-making. Le Parc de la Tête d'Or A relaxing way to spend an afternoon is in the Parc de la Tête d'Or in Lyon. Students can rent "pedalos" and paddle around the large lake. Those who are adventurous can paddle to the island in the center of the lake for more exploration. The park is also home to Lyon's zoo, and students are welcome to visit if they have time. Pérouges This perfectly preserved medieval village, perched on a hilltop, remains a model of medieval architecture. Its narrow, winding streets and authentic historical flavor make it very popular with visitors to France as well as French directors, who often use it as the setting for period films. The streets have barely changed since the Middle Ages and Place de la Halle is considered to be the prettiest market place in all of France. Aix-en-Provence Take a train ride to the southern part of France for a visit to Aix-en-Provence. This beautiful university town bustles with energy from the students and from those who want to find out first-hand about Mayle's Year in Provence, but during the summer a new energy emerges as visitors arrive from all over the world to hear the events associated with France's Fête de la Musique (Music Festival). Students will enjoy the tranquil atmosphere created by the lush trees and the patter of the fountains on the Cours Mirabeau.
