College for High School- English Literature
England
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: June-July (4 weeks)
Description:
The world has been coming to London even before Julius Caesar spent his summers here in 55 and 54 BCE. Come join us in the summer of 2007 to see why the Romans liked it so much they stuck around for the next 450 years. While you might not want to stay quite that long, you will want to savor every day of the three weeks you will be in residence with FSU in London. And, you'll get 9 university credit hours with FSU. From May 9th to August 8th, students take ENL 3334 Introduction to Shakespeare, HUM 2221Humanities: Homer to Gothic, and LIT 2081 Contemporary Literature. Through the use of the on-line venue "Blackboard" students deal directly with assignments and commentaries by the same instructors who will be guiding and touring with them in and around London. * Must have Internet Access * Must have Microsoft Word Upon registration, participants will be given an FSU email account, allowing them to access the website. From June 28 to July 19, what you read will be coordinated with what you see performed on the stage in London or Stratford. The authors' homes and neighborhoods, the paintings in the museums and galleries, and the music in the concerts and choral exhibitions will all be organized to relate back to your studies. You will walk the streets where Geoffrey Chaucer, Thomas More, William Shakespeare and John Milton walked, as well as the streets traversed by John, Paul, Ringo and George. You will travel outside of London in either coaches or trains to see where Thomas a Beckett was martyred, where the Romans watched theatre, where the Georgians had their beachside hideaways, where the prehistoric sun-worshipers calibrated their grand solar clock.
Highlights:
You will see Shakespeare plays performed in the authentic Elizabethan traditions of the GlobeTheatre, at Sratford-upon-Avon, and in the most modern styles of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and you will enjoy a modern West end drama and a musical. We will go to Charles Dickens' house as well as to Sigmund Freud's and Lewis Carroll's, and to several houses of Henry VIII. The British Museum and The National Gallery will become your neighborhood places to drop in. Which of the London parks will become your favorite: St. James, Green or Hyde; Kensington Gardens, Regents, or Holland? The squares and plazas of our neighborhood will be your old friends: Bloomsbury, Russell and Gordon; Covent Garden, Leicester and Piccadilly.
