Survey of Modern China

  China
    Beijing,  Hong Kong,  Sichuan

Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: June - August

Description: To see China now is to behold the legacy of 50 years under communist rule, and to witness the incredible social and economic changes happening under a booming free market economy. On our China program we visit historically significant cities and towns and we explore deep into the countryside. We travel to seldom visit villages that offer a clear window into China's past, and a vital perspective on development concerns of the present. Our program begins in Beijing, where we explore the spectacular monuments of the city, witness the frenetic pace of a modern capitol, and spend two days camping on a remote section of the Great Wall. Then we travel west to Tibetan monastic towns where we learn about Tibetan Buddhism and culture, and visit nomads in the nearby grasslands. Following an incredible overland journey from Gansu Province to Sichuan Province, we travel to Southern China where we enjoy the color and hospitality of small, ethnically diverse villages. In Southern China we bike through terraced rice fields, visit herbal doctors, climb sacred mountains, and hike down steep river gorges. We'll stay with families, meet with community leaders, and learn about China's educational system, as well as the dynamism of China's new economy. We conclude our program with an exploration of Hong Kong.

Highlights: Welcome to our youth programs. Here you will be able to learn about our rich learning adventures and the spectacular landscapes we explore. As you travel through these pages, imagine Asia's vibrant colors ' enthralling gold and jewel ' encrusted temples, brightly adorned mazes of outside markets, the awesome Himalayas. Savor the aromas ' fragrant burning incense, spattering yak-butter candles, spicy coconut curry. And hear the sounds ' moisture dripping slowly down jungle vines, mesmerizing chants of monks, footsteps of devoted pilgrims walking toward sacred, distant places. Hidden within these itineraries are spontaneous adventures and infinite personal discoveries, here ' amid the richness of Asia, waiting for you.
