Best High School Program in Spain (15 to 18 years old)

  Spain
  • Barcelona:
  • Barcelona
  • Cadiz:
  • Cadiz
  • All Other Areas:
  • Huelva

Durations of Program: 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Dates: Please inquire for specific dates.

Description: The host families will allow the students to share the everyday life of Spanish students. The student will live with a host family and go to school with one of the children (or a nearby neighbour). The families reflect the social image of the country, so they can be couples, divorced or widows with or without children, and of any age from 30 years old. The participants can be hosted by families with social level, race or religion different to theirs.

The Spanish school system is based on one full school year, from September until June. It is not divided into semesters or terms. There are two weeks of Christmas break and a two week break at Easter. The evaluation system is based on grading throughout the year, with marks issued before the Christmas and Easter breaks. Schools start usually at 8.30 in the morning and last until 14.30: there are no classes in the afternoon. Some schools offer optional workshops in the afternoon.

School attendance is now mandatory from age 6 to 16. The public educational system is divided into three stages:
1) Elementary education: 6 grades, from 6 to 12 years (grade 1 to 6)
2) Secondary education: 4 grades, from 12 to 16 years. (grade 7 to 10)
3) Bachillerato: 2 grades, from 16 to 18 years. (grade 11 and 12)

After the mandatory secondary education cycle, students may leave school with the certification of secondary graduation or continue high school education for two years and obtain the certification of "Bachiller".

Secondary Mandatory Education:
Main subjects are mandatory and cannot be chosen: Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Physical Education, Plastic and Visual Education, Spanish and Literature, Foreign Language (English), Mathematics, Music, Technology.

Bachillerato:
11th grade: Physical Education; Philosophy; Spanish and Literature I; Foreign Language I
12th grade: History; Philosophy; Spanish and Literature II; Foreign Language II

There are three more subjects to take, depending on the school's offer: Technical Drawing, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Latin, Greek, etc. Each school also offers some optional subject that may be chosen depending on the interest of the student.

Nacel cannot guarantee access to the grade and subjects chosen. This depends on availability at school and on the principal's decision. Spanish students have priority and availability will not be known until mid September.

Participants will be placed in public schools, unless otherwise requested.

Highlights: Schools are situated in the area of Cadiz (11 public schools, 3 private schools) and Huelva (2 public schools). Barcelona may be offered as well this year but with paid host families. Please advise for a quotation.
No guarantee is made with regard to placement in a particular region of Spain, nor in a town of a certain size, or with a particular kind of Host Family (for example, with a teenager in the home). Students cant choose the school or the city they want to go.
