High School in Germany (15 to 18 years old)

  Germany
  • Berlin:
  • Berlin
  • Munich:
  • Munich (Munchen)

Durations of Program: 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Dates: August to June

Description: To feel at home in Germany is the goal of our long term program. Our carefully chosen host families open their home not for a guest student, but for a new, temporary member of the family. Students attend the local public school, in most cases together with the children of their host family. This program exceeds by far the improvement of linguistic skills. Once a student is fluent in the German language, he will start discovering the German culture and form friendships that may last a lifetime. He will begin to see Germany as his second home and more often than not, return to Germany to continue his education or professional career. This program combines the adventure of living in a foreign country with the safe and affectionate family life.

This program combines a Homestay in a German host family with the enriching experience of life at a German high school. Students should be prepared to take part in family life as full members and to help with various tasks around the house. During their stay, students may stay with more than one host family.

Students must be between 15 and 18 years old at start of program.

Highlights: Most of our students will attend the local Gymnasium. With classes ranging from year 5 to year 13 it is the most difficult school type in Germany. Classes are more abstract, students are confronted with different theories and ideas, and asked to create their own opinion. Most of our long term students will attend year ten or eleven. Please note that the decision is solely up to the school principal. A good knowledge of the German language will help to be placed at a higher class, though. Graduation for students on an exchange visa is not possible.

A typical German school day could look like this:
-6:30 wake-up call
-7:00 breakfast
-7:30 go to school by bus, bike or on foot
-8:00 school starts classes are usually 45 minutes long
-13:00 school ends for younger students lunch and homework at home;
lunch break for older students followed by classes
-16:00 free time
-18:00 dinner with host family or friends
-19:00 finish homework or free time with family and friends
-22:00 bedtime
The students will have a two-days orientation in Cologne at the beginning of the program which includes food, accommodation and introduction of our program, the program rules, a city tour, etc. After the seminar (mostly Sundays), the students will travel to the host families (accompanied only for ground transport). This is organised through us and free of charge.

Every student must be interviewed in the home country before being accepted.
