Archaeology in Peru with Projects Abroad (2-Week High School Special)
Peru
- All Other Areas in Peru:
Sacred Valley of the Incas
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks and 2-4 weeks
Dates: Sunday 29th June - Saturday 12th July OR Sunday 20th July - Saturday 2nd August OR Sunday 3rd August - Saturday 16th August
Description:
Do you want to find out more about the amazing history of the Inca civilization? You will arrive in the Inca's Sacred Valley of Peru to work outdoors, surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Andes to help with our archaeological digs and restoration projects. Your trip will begin with an introduction to the grandeur of the Inca Empire. You will then be taken to the small Andean hamlet of Huyro, where you will work with our local archaeological experts. Here we work with the Peruvian Historical Institute helping to uncover and reconstruct Inca terraces and buildings in an area only recently discovered as a new Inca settlement. You will be taken to see many of the archaeological wonders of Peru including the magnificent Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo where the Inca fought their last battle with the Conquistadores. You will be able to visit the ruins and see the markets of traditional Peruvian towns. You could even whitewater raft down the Urubamba River and have a last night out in the Inca capital, Cusco.
Highlights:
For your accommodation, you will live in a community house close to the center of Huyro with a family of Projects Abroad staff that will cook and look after you. Volunteers are very much part of the Huyro community. Peru is a country of contrasts, a place of extremes: desert and jungle, snow-peaks and sand dunes, great wealth and grinding poverty. This project offers you the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do. In addition, volunteers on the August 3rd - August 16th round of projects in Peru also have the option of being escorted from New York - JFK airport.
Cost in US$: $ 2,195 for two weeks

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
