CIEE High School Abroad Program in Spain
Spain
Durations of Program: 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Description:
The High School Abroad Program is the best way for a high school student to become a global citizen and to achieve fluency in Spanish. With an office in Barcelona, InterHispania is the organization responsible for the placement and support of students while in Spain. Delegados or Coordinadores are local coordinators who recruit and screen families in their own towns and arrange for the students' placement in a local public high school or instituto. Academic Program Classes are conducted in Castilian Spanish. High School Abroad participants are expected to follow the Spanish school curriculum and to fully participate in the academic program. Typically, public institutos run from 8am to 2:30pm, with a half hour break at 11am. Private colegios often run from 9am to 1pm, then break for an hour lunch at school and resume from 2-4pm. Extra help is available to our students at an extra fee in either type of school. Eligibility Requirements On the day of departure, students must be between the ages of 15 and 18 years old and have completed the equivalent of two years of high school Spanish study. Students must have completed their first year of high school and be in good academic standing. Students must demonstrate, through the application process, their flexibility, maturity, adaptability and readiness to face the challenges of living in a new culture.
Highlights:
Teaching Award While in Spain you will truly become a member of your host family. Not only will they provide you with room and board, but they will be the ones with whom you share your daily adventures. Your host family will be there to applaud your developing language skills and to help you through your moments of homesickness. They will open both their homes and their hearts to you. Without their generosity this program would not be possible. The CIEE and Interhispania teaching awards offer a unique opportunity to give back to the host family who will provide you with so much. In addition to the gratitude you will be expressing to your host family, each award recipient will receive a financial reward to defray the cost of their stay in Spain. Winners of this teaching award will spend no more than 5 hours per week teaching member(s) of their host family English. These lessons can include conversation at the dining table, playing games, or any other imaginative lesson plan you can create. While these lessons can be fun and creative, they are meant to be taken seriously. You must demonstrate your commitment to teaching by completing a thorough and highly competitive application process. A limited number of awards will be granted for semester and year long students. Semester awards will be valued at USD 1000. Year awards will be valued at USD 2000. In order to apply, an additional teaching award application is required, and must be submitted along with the standard High School Abroad application.
