CIEE Gap Year Program in Rennes, France

  France
    Rennes

Durations of Program: 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Dates: Fall 2007: Early September to mid-December; Spring: Mid-January to mid-May; Academic Year: Early September to mid-May

Description: CIEE offers US high school graduates a unique way to explore the world. A Gap Year Abroad with CIEE offers college-bound graduates an opportunity to acquire a broader global perspective, foster independence and gain self-knowledge. Students seeking to stretch intellectually, explore new vistas, develop leadership and become responsible global citizens are ideal candidates for a CIEE Gap Year.

Spending a year or a semester living with a family abroad, studying and improving fluency in a modern language and volunteering in the community or working as an English teacher will allow students to immerse themselves in every aspect of the host culture and give their academic goals perspective and purpose. Day and weekend trips and other cultural excursions will provide an important dimension to understanding historical and social aspects of the country.

A Gap Year Abroad opens doors to the student's future, bridging the high school world to the road that lies ahead. The benefits of a Gap Year will enable students to enhance their global education and uniquely prepare them for their college experience.

Highlights: To familiarize students with local culture and the areas surrounding Rennes, group activities such as field trips will be organized. Host families will also be asked to show students points of regional interest and to share cultural information. All activity fees are included in the price of the program.

Host Families, Language Classes and Community Service

Students live with a host family in the city of Rennes or the immediate suburbs, which are on the bus line and linked to the subway system.

GAP Students receive language instruction 12.5 hours per week, meeting 2.5 hours per day. Classes consisting of 10-15 students take place in a language center. All students should have completed at least 2 years of high school French. A certificate of completion is given at the end of the term.

All students are required to participate in service and/or internship activities. There is a wide range of volunteer programs for their choice. An average of ten hours per week is expected from the students and the daily schedule will vary. One of the goals of the service/internship is to help students gain a better understanding of French culture through an insider's perspective.
