SYA India
India
Durations of Program: 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Dates: Fall Semester 2008
Description:
School Year Abroad students will live the culture of India in a host family where they will learn Hindi, the third-most spoken language in the world, and work to acquire the intellectual tools to understand how economies develop. This new program will introduce students to a part of the world most have not explored and to human challenges they almost never see. While SYA India will share fundamental characteristics with its sister schools in China, France, Italy and Spain -- rigorous classes, college counseling and testing, second language acquisition, home-stay, educational travel, and careful attention to health and safety -- the academic program will include economics and environmental science as ways to begin to understand a developing nation. In its inaugural year, 2008-2009, SYA India will open with approximately 20 students in grades 11, 12 and PG, for the first semester only. The plan is to accept full-year students beginning in Year II of the new school.

School Year Abroad's Mission Statement: Using second language acquisition as the vehicle and foreign culture as the extension of the classrooms, School Year Abroad aims to teach U.S. secondary students self-reliance, responsible decision-making, resourcefulness, adaptability and respect for difference. While the international settings of SYA are unlike U.S. schools in many ways, and although students enjoy more independence than in most U.S. independent schools, our emphasis is on intellectual rigor in traditionally structured classes and on personal integrity and consideration for others in school, in host families and in the community.
