Archeology in Romania (2-Week Summer Program for High School Students)
Romania
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks and 2-4 weeks
Dates: Sunday July 20th - Saturday August 2nd / Sunday August 10th - Saturday August 23rd
Description:
Our archaeology program in Romania is based around the historic towns of Alba Iulia and Bourdosani in Transylvania, which are considered areas of huge archaeological importance. Artifacts dating back to 4,000 BC have been excavated as well as Greek, Roman, and Dacian remains. It is a region steeped in history and volunteers will be able to join some of the many excavations taking place. The work you will be involved in varies. There will be opportunities to help out on an archaeological dig and assist in the restoration of a medieval church. Other tasks involve cleaning pottery, visits to museums, and recording items found during digs. Our archaeology coordinator, George Ciotlausi, provides full training for volunteers. Accommodation is in local hostels, with local families or on site depending on the location of the project you are working on. Prepare to get your hands dirty!
Highlights:
Romania, in Eastern Europe, is a unique and wonderful place to complete a volunteer project or internship. The outstanding scenery, biodiversity and paradoxes of a country that is in the process of economic and cultural change will mould the experiences on any trip to Romania. This country, which is slightly smaller than the UK, occupies the heart of Eastern Europe but has a unique Latin culture. All accommodation is organized, paid for and monitored by Projects Abroad. All project placements are regularly visited and checked. We require high standards of supervision and accommodation, which are verified before you arrive in Romania. This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
