Care Work in Sri Lanka with Projects Abroad (2-Week Summer Special for High School Students)
Sri Lanka
- Other Cities in Sri Lanka:
Kandy
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks and 2-4 weeks
Dates: Sunday July 20th - Saturday August 2nd / Sunday August 3rd - Saturday August 16th
Description:
Based in many small towns along the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, south of Colombo, and in the mountain top hill station town of Kandy - care work in Sri Lanka is a multifaceted experience offering an enormous variety of choice. However, all the work has one basic requirement in common: a love of working with children. You will work with your fellow volunteers in orphanages and day care centers helping children learn the alphabet or organizing activities like arts and crafts. In the afternoons, volunteers assist in numerous areas with the children -- from helping with homework to organizing and playing sports and games to reading with a child individually. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit a Tsunami affected area. Work has been ongoing since the Tsunami hit in 2004 and thankfully most of the affected families have been re-housed. Still, a lot of work is needed to regenerate local communities and provide extra educational support to children affected by the tragedy. These projects will give you a great chance to continue the good work done by our past volunteers. You might be helping with basic conversational English lessons or organizing a sports day where children from local communities can get involved. Depending on the weather during the weekend, we will either take you rafting or to one of the many beaches in the region for water sports.
Highlights:
Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with many wonderful volunteer projects and internships available for volunteers interested in exploring this island in South Asia. Sri Lanka is the teardrop off the tip of Southern India. This tropical island is famed for its palm-fringed beaches, tea plantations and rickshaws. This beautiful country has been run by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British, gaining independence in 1948. It is now a democracy that continues to make economic progress, despite tensions in the far north east of the island and the devastation inflicted on the south by the 2004 Tsunami. Sri Lanka's population is multi-religious and multi-ethnic, and its cultural heritage is equally as rich and diverse. Its countryside is lovely and teeming with varied and exotic wildlife species. There are more than ten national parks in Sri Lanka, and the Sinharaja Rainforest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All accommodation is organized, paid for and monitored by Projects Abroad. All project placements are regularly visited and checked. We require high standards of supervision and accommodation, which are verified before you arrive in Sri Lanka. This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
