Description: Guatemala is a land where history is alive, cultures are preserved, and yet, is facing the same challenges of globalization that industrialized countries face. Questions of identity, security and culture in a global economy.

This 1-week journey is based in rural town of Tecpan, Guatemala. While only two hours from the bustling, urban capital city, it is a town with very strong Mayan influence. It is the home of the Kak'chikél people who still maintain their culture and language.

Highlights: Community Service

Work with innovative educational organizations that are working with the children of farming families.

You will share your talents doing arts, crafts, sports and basic conversational English.   Most importantly, you will be a friend and role model. This is not just an opportunity to observe another culture and community you will directly engage with local children. Students will receive a certificate for 15 hours of community service.

Learning

This region of Guatemala is the base for many innovative non-profit organizations working with indigenous people in rural communities to help them cope with globalization. We will meet women's cooperative that is growing cash crops to generate income for their families and artisans groups that use art and weaving as a way of preserving the culture. You will interact with local leaders to learn more about how they are preserving their culture in the face of globalization.

Exploration

The town of Tecpan is located near many important cultural treasures. You will visit the famous Mayan ruins at Iximche, participate in a traditional ceremony with a Mayan priest. We will also travel to neighboring towns such as the charming, colonial town of Antigua and to the sacred lake Atitlan.
