Description:
Florence is the spectacular city of the Renaissance - synonymous with high culture and sophistication. Florence houses nearly one fifth of the world's art treasures and abounds in architectural beauty, sculpture, painting, major museums, palaces and innumerable churches. Florence is the ideal Italian location for ASA's intensive interdisciplinary Summer Study Abroad program, where you will find yourself immersed in the arts and the humanities as well as daily exposure to urban Florentine life. Here is the opportunity of a lifetime to fulfill your interests in art, art history, fashion, architecture, visual arts, Italian language and culture. This ASA Summer Study Abroad program combines the benefits of a pre-college curriculum with real-life cultural immersion, giving you the opportunity to experience Italian culture first hand. Students are taught by native professors, curators and artists who are experts in their field and are dedicated to ensuring you get the broadest exposure to the cultural riches of Florence. Your summer home and location of classes will be Convitto della Calza: in the heart of the city, uniquely charming for its combination of a 16th-century cloister, halls frescoed with original masterpieces such as Francibigio's Last Supper, and such modern conveniences as wi-fi in each room.
Highlights:
You will enjoy daily activities, guided tours, and sports as well as weekend excursions. From the street vendors gathering on the Ponte Vecchio to the wonders of art in the Uffizi Galley of Florence, and the hills of Chianti across the river, Florence is a magnificent place to live and study. Afternoons and evenings, you will appreciate guided discovery of this vibrant city -- or explore it independently. The city's piazzas are wonderful places bustling with people gazing at world-famous buildings, sculptures and fountains. The city offers a fantastic variety of concerts, film and, of course, excellent food. Part of the fun of being in Florence is not just enjoying what Florence has to offer, but discovering some of the magnificent countryside and sites in Tuscany and beyond. You can: * explore the medieval city of Siena * cross the magnificent Tuscan countryside and visit Cortona * visit the famous tilting tower of Pisa * see San Gimignano and its thirteen towers * enjoy historic Arezzo and San Sepolcro, and the city of Lucca In addition, spend a spectacular weekend trip to Rome: an extraordinary combination of artistic and architectural masterpieces, classical ruins, and extravagant baroque churches and piazzas. Marvel at the Colosseum, The Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica. Visit the Roman Forum; enjoy the restaurants, cafes and energy of one of Europe's most dynamic cities. And experience the Pantheon, the Roman "temple of all the gods." ASA's Summer Study Abroad program in Florence offers you a perfect educational and cultural experience amidst the beauty of the old and the energy of the new. Our goal is to make Florence fully accessible to you, ensuring the experience is an inspiration not only for the summer, but for many years to come.
