Tanzania
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks and 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Spring: March-April, Summer: June- August, All year long
Description:
The Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania is dominated both geographically and spiritually by Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent. The mountain, waterfalls, coffee plantations and banana fields create an incredible setting for the Global Leadership Adventures program. Over the two weeks, you will go on an authentic African safari, hike around Mount Kilimanjaro and visit a Masai village. And most importantly, spend time volunteering at a local orphanage and help to make a difference in the lives of Tanzanian children.
Highlights:
Community service: Working at the local orphanages helping them fix up the facilities by painting and building playgrounds for the children. In addition, you will have the opportunity to help the children practice their English, and play educational games. Most importantly, you'll be a friend and a role model for the children. Learning: Besides community service, you will learn about Tanzania's rich culture. Specifically, you will experience the traditions of the the Chagga people who live around Mount Kilimanjaro, including visits to their farms and homes to learn about each others lives. Although English is widely spoken, you will also learn to speak some Swahili. You will learn from guest speakers about social issues facing the community such as the devastating HIV/AIDS epidemic. Excursions: Besides spending a day hiking on Mount Kilimanjaro, you will also visit some of the world's most spectacular safari parks. Over the weekend you will visit two of the world's most famous wildlife reserves: Ngorogoro Crater and Lake Manyara. You will have the opportunity to take photos of zebras, lions, tigers, elephants, wildebeest, rhinos, flamingos and many, many other species in their natural habitat. We will also visit a Masai village. They are a nomadic tribe that is proud of their strong and mighty Masai warriors. While visiting a village you will be have the chance to learn everything you want to know about their customs, rituals, natural medicines, and traditional red clothing.
