LPI Arts and Human Sciences in London, England
England
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Please visit our website for more information
Description:
As the capital city of England, London elegantly portrays itself as both a center for education and one of the most historically significant cities in the western world. Upon arrival, visitors immediately recognize some of the world's most famous architectural and cultural gems: Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, and many more. That being said, London is not without natural beauty: the Thames River, bisecting the city north from south, has been a part of London's topography since the area was first settled by the Romans in 34 AD. Since its beginnings as a modest Roman outpost to its years as the capitol of the British Empire, London today is a city that has impacted much of the modern world. The city beckons students seeking to discover the metropolitan hub of the United Kingdom: a capital city rich with culture, literary significance, and the roots of western civilization. In London, LPI offers students a 3-week program in July, which focuses on London as a world city from 1845 to present, examining its changing character in relation to historical, cultural, literary, and political contexts. The class is taught for LPI students only by a team of professors from the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at the London South Bank University (LSBU. Founded in 1892, London Southbank University started life as the Borough Polytechnic Institute, and is today one of the capital's oldest universities. With over 23,500 students (3,000 international), LSBU is one of the largest universities in London and offers a wide range of subjects including engineering, business, liberal arts and the sciences. The main campus is situated a short walk from many of London's major landmarks and at the hub of local transport. All LPI students will live in single room apartments with internet access (internet cable not provided) and private bathrooms. The on-site LPI directors will also live in the apartments providing the necessary supervision. Participants will be provided three meals per day (except on LPI excursion days), which consist of a daily continental breakfast, light hot lunch and evening meal. Meals will be served in one of the main university cafeterias. A communal kitchen in the apartments is also available for student use. In addition, students will have easy access to all university facilities including libraries, classrooms and meeting rooms.

LPI (Learning Programs International)'s Mission Statement: LPI, the high school division of International Studies Abroad (ISA) was established in 1989 to provide an academically challenging and culturally thorough study abroad program for U.S. high school students. Based in Austin, Texas, LPI reaches out to provide study abroad opportunities to students from across the United States. LPI works closely with fully-accredited foreign universities and the LPI resident staff in each program location in order to provide cultural activities, tutoring services, language exchanges, volunteer opportunities, and numerous possibilities for improving language performance. Through LPI, students are able to equip themselves with a working knowledge of a foreign language, earn college credit, experience another culture and explore the area around their program city through cultural excursions.
