Pre-College Cultural Enrichment Program: The Edge

Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks

Description:
The Edge is an intensive three-week pre-college program that responds to the needs of the college bound high school student who is seeking an international cultural experience with a college admissions focus. The program allows you to:

--obtain an emerging markets internship,
--take an intense SAT Reasoning preparation course,
--participate in a group service learning project,
--learn from visiting USA professors, and
--explore the natural wonders of Ghana.

The Edge is an ideal experience for high school students from grades 9-12:

Students can apply individually; or

Schools/organizations with a minimum of six (6) participants may apply as a group and customize their own experience.

Each group of six (6) is entitled to a free adult chaperon (airfare not included).

Ghana--the land of sunshine and smiles--is a treasure for anyone looking to safely experience the African landscape. Ghanaians are praised for being Africa's friendliest and most welcoming people. An experience in Ghana offers the perfect blend of contemporary life and traditional society for those who want to experience the ancient world but still enjoy the amenities of modernity.

ILC Africa conducts all of our activities in safe, secure and friendly environments. Students are provided with 24-hour on-call supervision to attend to any health, safety or security issues. Upon arrival in Ghana, students are provided with an in-depth orientation designed to acclimate them to their new surroundings and dispense information on how to guard themselves against any potential safety risks. Safety is of our highest priority.

Pre-College Cultural Enrichment Program: The Edge

Highlights: Emerging Markets Internship:

The Edge offers the unique opportunity for high school students to gain real-world experience through an internship in the following areas: Agriculture, Business/Financial Markets, Education, Environmental Science, International Law, Public Health/Medicine, Media/Journalism, Mining/Extractive Industries, Non-profit Management, Telecommunication, or Tourism.

Emerging Markets Internships at the high school level are excellent opportunities for students to expand career choices and select college majors and minors. Students are matched with companies following a thoroughly guided process that identifies their interests, experiences and personalities.

Intense SAT Reasoning Prep Course:
Students will strengthen their SAT Reasoning scores with intense classroom instruction lead by Princeton Review certified teachers.

Group Service Learning Project:
As part of The Edge program students can earn up to 20 hours of serving learning participation in the following sectors: Education (Tutoring); Community Development (Habitat for Humanity), Agriculture (Family Farm Assistance) and Health (Hospital Services).   Service-learning offers students an unrivaled opportunity to form a group and learn about themselves while serving the Ghanaian community through volunteerism.

Seminar led by visiting US professor: Crafting the Perfect College Essay:
Students will experience the academic rigors of a seminar writing course taught by a visiting US professor.

Cultural Immersion:
During weekend excursions, students will explore the traditional, historical and natural wonders of Ghana including waterfalls, rain forests, national wildlife preserves, slave castles and forts, cultural performances and traditional villages.   Over the course of the program students will have ongoing exposure to the local languages, customs and foods.

Local ILC Africa students will serve as peer leaders to the American students. This cadre of high school and undergraduate students provides a dynamic environment for the participants to learn about teenage life in Ghana and in turn teach the local students about life abroad.
