Description:
This week-long program is designed to familiarize the participant with the history of the Bahamas, the history of plantations in the Bahamas, archaeological field techniques, and the importance of heritage tourism projects as a means of sustainable economic development. Participants will excavate an 18th Century slave plantation 5 hours per day, with afternoon leisure time each day to snorkel, swim, sail, etc. Participants stay at an environmentally friendly resort for the week. Evenings will include presentations by Bahamian experts on local history, and Bahamian industries, politics and economy.
Highlights:
Archaeology in paradise! Excavate on the site of an 18th century slave plantation on an island in the Bahamas that is relatively unspoiled by development! No high-rise resorts, no casinos, and no swarms of wrist-band-wearing tourists here! Just a beautiful island with countless natural and historical points of interest! We begin the week with a wonderful island tour led by the Tourism Executive for the Long Island Office of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation. We will also have a special private tour of the Long Island Museum. Activities available for free time include: snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, swimming, deep-sea and bone fishing, etc.
Qualifications:
No experience necessary. Must be able to walk 1 mile, must be able to bend and kneel.

Dig The Bahamas! 's Mission Statement: An intensive week-long course featuring a combination of lecture and excavation at the site of an 18th Century cotton and livestock plantation in the Bahamas. The site contains standing ruins as well as archaeological deposits. Participants will learn archaeological techniques and the importance of heritage tourism in 3rd world countries.
